Latvian Celiac Society "Life Without Gluten" (Latvijas celiakijas pacientu biedrība „Dzīve bez glutēna”) will organize two gluten- free summer camps for children, who has to live according to strict gluten-free diet. Thanks to the support from The British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia (BritCham), Oriola Riga and food producer Schär, the camp with complete gluten-free catering will be available also for children from poor families.
In 2014 "Life Without Gluten" organized the first gluten-free summer camp in Latvia. It was highly appreciated by parents and what is even more important - by children themselves, because many of them participated in the camp for the first time in their lives. Taking into account high demand for this camp, this year the association will organize two camps, significantly expanding the number of visitors.
Anna Vilsone, Chairman of "Life Without Gluten": "Analyzing camps available to Latvian children, we see that some of them already mark the gluten-free dining option. That is the most important prerequisite for children, who are diagnosed with celiac disease, however, closer contact with organizers shows that they are not always able to provide this option. Therefore we believe that at the moment a specialized gluten-free camp is one of the very few options for children with celiac disease to fully enjoy summer holidays”.
Anna Ivi Buce, Executive Director and Board Member of The British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia (BritCham): "This year we organized “Burns Supper”, devoted to Scottish poet Robert Burns for the 18th time in Latvia. Traditionally, this is the largest annual charity event for The British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia where participants have an opportunity to donate for a particular purpose. Understanding the situation which children with gluten problems are facing, also this year BritCham via Burns Supper has provided support, allowing children from poor families to participate in gluten free summer camps organised by “Life without gluten”.
Thanks to the support of company Oriola Riga and Italy food producer Schär, children will be provided with full, balanced and safe diet during both camps. The first camp will be held in late June in Zemgale, the other - at the end of July in Vidzeme. More information about the camp and its program available on the web site www.dzivebezglutena.lv.
